Changing Your Puppy Food

Changing Your Puppy Food

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting.  Often your breeder or rescue centre will send you home with their chosen puppy food, with instructions to not change it.  This is a good idea for the first couple of weeks while your puppy gets settled but after that you absolutely can change their food.

Why you might want to change your puppy food

  • moving to a local independent brand (like ours)
  • purchasing puppy food that is readily available
  • choosing a recipe that is higher quality
  • deciding to feed raw, fresh or dry according to your life style & budget
  • puppy is showing signs of allergic reactions or sensitivities such as itchy skin or tummy troubles

How to transition your puppy's food safely

We recommend transitioning your puppy from one food to another over a period of 2 weeks.  Gradually reducing the old food and introducing the new food, so that by the end of week 1 the mixture is 50% new food v 50% old food and by the end of week 2 they are wholly on the new food

We recommend (based on guidance from our manufacturers nutrition team) that you remain on the new food for a minimum of 3 months to allow your pup's stomach to settle.  During this period you may have 1 or 2 tummy issues; this is usually due to your puppy's stomach adjusting to the new food but if you are concerned at all please consult your vet.

What's the best flavour of puppy food to feed?

Our puppy food recipes use turkey or beef and is grain free.  We decided not to use a recipe with chicken or rice as these can cause allergies or sensitivities.
