What to expect when you're expecting a puppy

What to expect when you're expecting a puppy

You've brought your cute bundle home, they've done a first wee in the garden and you feel like your winning at life

Then it starts.  The nipping, the chewing, running off with socks, the mad running around the house, the separation anxiety, the crying and whimpering, the constant need for attention

This is all completely normal and breathe!

The key to managing all of this is preparation, consistency and assistance/training advice

First things first; everyone you have ever known who has owned a dog will have an opinion about how your should train your puppy, what products you should use even what food you should feed it.  At Woof we are a great believer in doing what's right for you in terms if your lifestyle, budget and the type of pet parent you want to be

Being dog owners ourselves, one of which is a reactive dog - we are an inclusive and judgement free business.  We encourage everyone to develop a strong, loving and lasting bond with their dogs and help you to achieve this through advice, guidance and partnerships

We know it's tempting but you don't need to buy everything all at once. Use our guide Puppy Essentials - preparing for your new puppy to help establish the basics then once your pup has settled and you start to learn their preferences you can select products based on this

Dogs love routine and consistency and usually learn very quickly so remember to set your routines early on.  Make sure that everyone in the household is using the same commands and rewards the same behaviours.  Puppies can be adept at getting what they want so be firm - which is tough when they turn on those big eyes

Being prepared reduces your stress and helps manage the unpredictable. The main pain points for most owners are needing distractions when you are out walking, keeping your dog occupied when you have a meeting - multiple lick mats prepared in the freezer ready to go is great for this or a range of treat dispenser toys or appropriate chews which can be reached for at a moments notice

It's ok to ask for help too.  Getting the right advice from the start makes a massive difference to having an adult dog that is well behaved and perfectly mannered. We have aligned ourselves with positive reinforcement, force free dog trainers and walkers to help support you in your relationship with your dog

Finally, expect to have a lot of fun. Dogs have this way of filling a hole in your life that you never knew existed. Leave the room for 5 minutes and it's like you've been away for weeks, they are always there ready to be stroked or cuddled, they are grateful for the feeding, treating and the walks.  They love to be played with and want to be part of your life

We can't wait to meet your bundle of joy
